Well, there are many stories and versions with everyone claiming it to be their own. But there is one story which is the most popular and floating on the internet today.

A Pakistani chef, Ali Ahmed Aslam, proprietor of the Shish Mahal restaurant in the west end of Glasgow, improvised upon a Chicken tikka recipe with the addition of some yoghurt, tomato soup, cream and spices. An accidental invention if I may say so, but ain’t most classics an accident?   In 2013, his son Asif Ali told the story of its invention in 1971 to the BBC’s Hairy Bikers TV cookery programme as under,

“On a typical dark, wet Glasgow night, a bus driver coming off shift came in and ordered a chicken curry. He sent it back to the waiter saying it’s dry. At the time, Dad had an ulcer and was enjoying a plate of tomato soup. So he said why not put some tomato soup into the curry with some spices. They sent it back to the table and the bus driver absolutely loved it. He and his friends came back again and again and we put it on the menu.”

My version of the recipe and trust me you will love it!
Ingredients
Marination of chicken
250 gms Chicken boneless
50 gms yogurt
1 tbsp red chilli powder
1 tsp turmeric
½ no lemon juice
1 tbsp mustard oil
Salt to taste

Tikka Masala
2 tbsp oil
2 medium onions
3-4 garlic cloves
3 large tomatoes
1 tsp chopped green chilly
1 tbsp red chilli powder
1 tsp turmeric
½ tsp Garam masala
2 tbsp cream

Method
– Marinate the chicken thigh and leg pieces with yogurt, red chilli powder, salt, mustard oil and turmeric.
– Leave it to marinate for 15-20 minutes
– To make masala heat the pan with oil then add onions and garlic,once it becomes light golden add tomatoes and cook them well then add the powdered spiced red chilli powder, salt, turmeric and garam masala stir properly and let the spices cook well
-Add little bit of water and cook it well.
– When the masala is ready add it to the grinder and once it cools down run it into smooth paste
-Put the chicken pieces into the skewers, heat some oil and put in the chicken tikka.
– Grind the masala paste and cook it again.
– Plate the dish by creating a bed of masala and on the top it, keep the skewer of chicken tikka
And Chicken Tikka Masala is ready to be served!
